Missy Elliott “Relevant” Again Thanks To Michelle Obama And “Carpool Karaoke”: Time To Drop A New Single!?
When Missy Elliot performed alongside Katy Perry by surprise during the pop singer’s 2015 Super Bowl Halftime Show extravaganza everybody knew “Queen Misdemeanor” had to stop playing around and pull a comeback already.
All of her hits Missy performed with Katy rose to the Top 10 on iTunes immediately after last year’s Super Bowl and I think that was the turning point for Missy and Atlantic Records to book a meeting, and start talking seriously about making new music again - 10 years after the release of Missy’s last album “The Cookbook”.
Months passed and in November Missy dropped her first radio single in a decade “WTF (Where They From)”, an infectious drum-heavy tune produced by Pharrell. Unfortunately, though, after much hype, a high-budget music video, and an expensive performance slot on “The Voice” last year, Missy’s “WTF” was unable to reach the Top 10 on Rhythmic radio or the Top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. It seemed like the “hype” for Missy’s comeback had diminished. Or… what we saw after the Super Bowl earlier that year with the incredible surge of digital sales of Missy’s hits was maybe just "one-off" nostalgia from fans? Did we get it wrong reading what music lovers were saying? Were they not asking for a Missy comeback after all!?
Good or bad reading one thing is for certain. Missy isn’t throwing the towel just yet. She may have had put the release of further new music on hold until a thorough analysis of her situation is done but she is working hard to be relevant again before the public eye so people don’t totally disconnect from her again. First she recently attended VH1’s Hip Hop Honors where she was one of the tributed stars, and earlier this week she made a surprise appearance on First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama’s “Carpool Karaoke” episode on “The Late Late Show with James Corden”.
Ms. Obama was giving funnyman James Corden a tour around The White House when suddenly, after jamming to a few vintage songs on the radio and Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies”, Missy Elliot appeared in the back to rap her verse of Michelle Obama’s charity single “This Is For My Girls” - and then stuck around to slay “Get Ur Freak On” with the help of Obama’s wife and James Corden. In short: IT WAS SUCH AN AMAZING THING TO WATCH!
This “Carpool Karaoke” episode has been watched over 27 million times already as of this post and I think it’s pretty alright to say that the “hype” for Missy Elliot is back. She feels “relevant” again after this “Carpool Karaoke”, and I believe that if Missy’s smart she’d put a new single out very soon. She is making headlines again and she should not throw this new opportunity away.
Come on, Missy! You shouldn't wait months to release new music now, for the "hype" could be gone by then AGAIN!
