The Nostalgia Was Real In Missy Elliott’s Tribute At 2016 Hip Hop Honors: Trina, Tweet & Monica Perform!
VH1’s 2016 “Hip Hop Honors” (aired earlier this week) is going to be one to remember.
Missy Elliott was one of the honorees (alongside Lil’ Kim, Queen Latifah, Salt-N-Pepa) this year, and the tribute show VH1 put together for her was EPIC.
During the first Missy tribute performance, Remy Ma covered “Work It”, Nelly Furtado did her “Get Ur Freak On” remix verse, Eve rapped “Hot Boyz”, and Trina slayed “One Minute Man”.
Didn’t really care for Remy Ma but I did love Eve, Nelly and Trina. It’s such a shame Eve is not “hot” anymore. Why aren’t labels fighting each other to get a new album from E-V-E released through them? She is such an incredible rapper and her flow is still so captivating. What the hell is going on here?
Really cool seeing Nelly Furtado too. Her “Get Ur Freak On” rendition made me remember the 2001 VMAs!
And last but not the least, the baddest b*tch in the game Trina slayed her “One Minute Man” verse. Thank God she’s still dropping new songs for us here and there from time to time.
Later in the night, three other black women hit the stage to tribute Missy. These were: Fantasia, Monica and Tweet.
This time they didn’t cover Missy Elliot hits but performed songs she so kindly either wrote or produced for them.
Fantasia performed her iconic “Free Yourself” ballad, Monica sang her breakup anthem “So Gone”, and Tweet rose the temperature in the venue with a steamy “Oops (Oh My)” performance.
MONICA! TWEET! Oh, the old days. I’m so going to play their old albums tonight.
