Most Popular Songs of 2014 (Overview)
It's December again, which means Directlyrics is looking back at the most popular songs of 2014. Our list is based on the number of page views for each song.
This year's #1 is no surprise to us. With over 10x the number of views compared to the #2, Taylor Swift is back at the top, dominating the top 10 with three positions. Just like in the previous years "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" (#1, 2012) and "I Knew You Were Trouble" (#4, 2013) she continues to reign the pop scene.
Jessie J (with help from Ariande Grande and Nicky Minaj) and Selena Gomez both released very US radio-friendly songs which lead them to their #3 and #4 position.
Continuing further down you see how 2014 has been dominated by female artists, with a few exceptions like ILoveMakonnen & Drake's "Tuesday" (#2), Jason Aldean (#5), One Direction (#13) and OneRepublic (#15).
Our list being determined by our own page views, caused a few songs to drop too low for their actual popularity. Pharrel's "Happy" for example is way down the list (#41), because we had a hard time competing with Azlyrics and Rapgenius, but he obviously should've been in the top 10 if you ask me.
New
This year had not many surprises. Exception is Iggy Azalea's "Fancy" which is charting at #10 and with that position, the best new artist of 2014. Honorable mention is Meghan Trainor, who was able to gain a huge following this year and is mentioned two times in the top 20.
Who we miss
Rihanna, after her huge success "Stay" is not in this year's list. Also Justin Timberlake ("Suit and Tie") didn't do much. In the rap genre, Lil Wayne isn't listed anymore while Drake does take a very nice spot in 2014 at #2.

Directlyrics
Our site had a turbulent year, with traffic decreasing due to increased competition. Luckily we were able to get growth back, and even had 1 million page views on the day Taylor Swifts's 1989 album came out.
We also released a new layout, with an integrated playlist, which shows nice engagement. The new layout's focus was on speed, I'm sure you've noticed. Any feedback is always welcome at yvo@directlyrics.com.
