World Premiere: The Band Perry - "Comeback Kid" [Full Audio + Review]

band perry comeback kid cover

From its title I thought The Band Perry’s new single “Comeback Kid” (which world premiered this Monday morning - August 1st) was going to be a song about the awful times they have had to live ever since releasing the infamous RedOne-produced singleLive Forever” in the summer of 2015 - which was poorly reviewed by every prestigious blog and hated by every hardcore fan of The Band Perry, but then when I started listening to “Comeback Kid” a few moments ago I changed my mind for a second and started to believe then that the band’s new single was actually an anthem for bullied kids. BUT THEN everything got finally super clear in the bridge when Kimberly Perry sang: “I believe it's been a year, the worst one I've ever lived”. BOOM! Mystery over. As I first thought, “Comeback Kid” is indeed a song inspired by The Band Perry’s tragic last year and how hurt they felt by everything that happened to them, was said about them and was done to them. For they not only lost fans, lost a lot of money, and were hated by reviewers due to “Live Forever”, they also lost their deal with Republic Nashville. Yes, the ultimately got another deal with Interscope, but Republic Nashville was where they had been since the very beginning of their career as a band. And it was home to them.

Learning from their mistakes, The Band Perry has returned today with a new single. “Comeback Kid”, though, does share something from that “dark” “Live Forever” era: they are moving forward with their transition to pop music. “Comeback Kid” is a pop ballad - it may have some traces of country but they are very minimal - but it is an emotional one, one that soars in the chorus and bridge, one very well written, one non-produced by RedOne, and one where Kimberly Perry narrates her suffering process of the last year, and talks about discovering her inner strength and how she plans to become a better version of herself learning from her past.

This may be a hit for The Band Perry...it definitely sounds like one. That chorus, those lyrics, that emotion... it all screams "hit" to me. And if this does become a hit, then Kimberly and Co. would DEFINITELY be an official “comeback kid”. What a historic feat this would be for them!

By the way, who do you think they're referring to when they mention "THEY" in the song? The industry? Their old label? Bloggers? Fans who betrayed them?

Hit or Miss?
