Video Premiere: Mary J. Blige - "Thick of It"
Queen of R&B and hip-hop Mary J. Blige released last month a new single titled “Thick of It”, which she co-write with Jazmine Sullivan, will appear on her forthcoming album “Strength of a Woman”, and was inspired by her shocking split from husband Kendu Isaacs (12 years of marriage!). Mary J. Blige spills a lot of details about her divorce in “Thick of It”.
A month after the digital release of this new single, here’s finally the music video for the emotional mid-tempo ballad, which Mary J. Blige uploaded this Monday morning (Nov. 7) on her VEVO channel.
In the Dennis Leupold-directed music video, which looks straight-up low-budget, sees the queen powerfully singing “Thick of It” in a gold-painted room. The 45-year-old will sport three looks in the video: one with black shorts and a Yankees cap, another one with a dark leather dress, and then one with a white fur coat.
Truth is I’m a bit disappointed by this, because “Thick of It” is clearly an important song to Mary J. Blige and I expected a better treatment for the video. Maybe she could have hired a couple of actors to portray the problems in the last year or so of Mary’s marriage with Kendu - or something like that. But - trying to be not entirely critical, I must say I did like Mary’s delivery in the video. Her face truly reflected pain.
