Song Premiere: Carly Rae Jepsen Dares To Cover Wham!’s “Last Christmas”, Will She End 2015 With A ‘Hit’?
Don’t worry. Carly Rae Jepsen isn’t going to commit suicide by releasing a Christmas album. She’s just making good use of her free time now that she has almost nothing to do after the commercial failure of her latest album “Emotion” and has decided to release a Christmas single for her few fans. I say ‘few’ because it’s a fact. And don’t hate on me. How many copies did “Emotion” sell in the US? No more comments…
This one-off Christmas single of Carly’s is out today, November 20th online and this ain’t no original song, but a cover. A Mariah Carey cover maybe? Nop! It’s a cover of Wham!’s 1984 Christmas classic “Last Christmas”. That’s right. Carly Rae Jepsen has dared to record her own take on this holiday hit written by George Michael.
Should you be covering your ears before clicking ‘play’ below? Not at all! Although I’m very harsh on Carly, I must say that this cover ain’t at all bad. I even dare to say that Ms. Jepsen has made a good call by covering this particular Christmas classic. For it suits her soft vocals really well. Moreover, Carly fortunately hasn’t gone for the atrocious and hasn’t recorded a ‘modern mainstream’ take on “Last Christmas” but she has remained faithful to its 80’s vibe, only adding a few cool saxophone elements, and making “Last Christmas” sound hi-fi of course.
Truth is I’ve been happily surprised by this. Congratulations are in order for Carly Rae Jepsen. I’m happy she’ll be able to finish 2015 with a smile on her face. Despite all this though, I think it was the most intelligent move to just release a single and not an entire Christmas album.
