So Good! John Newman Performs "Soul-Gospel" Cover Of Carly Rae Jepsen's "Run Away With Me" On BBC Live Lounge: Must-Listen!
Wasn’t looking forward to John Newman’s Live Lounge session today (Sept. 28th) on BBC Radio 1 until I was informed he was going to cover Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Run Away With Me”, and this got me curious…so I listened live.
The first song he did on the Clara Amfo-hosted “Live Lounge” was the newest single from his upcoming second studio album “Revolve” (out October 16th in the UK), the kind of a borefest “Tiring Game”. I just don’t care for this song. I did think, however, that the lead single “Come and Get It” was a good one. Unfortunately, this only peaked at #5 in the UK on its debut week; which by UK music industry standards isn’t really the best debut position for a single – especially when the artist in question already has a #1 hit in the bag (“Love Me Again” in 2013).
The second song John performed in acoustic mode on “Live Lounge” was his mandatory cover that he had previously announced would be Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Run Away With Me” – the best song from the Canadian singer’s “Emotion” flop album. I was very curious to see what John Newman had in store for us with this cover, and the final result was impressive. He gave “Run Away With Me” the “soul/gospel” treatment and he TOOK ME TO CHURCH with this performance. Great vocals, great emotion, great melody changes, and great gospel choir!
