Shawn Mendes Premieres “Lost In Japan” Music Video, Favors Original Version Over Zedd Remix… Oops: Watch Now

Truth be told Shawn Mendes isn’t having the best of eras with his third studio album. Yes the eponymous LP may have debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart but the singles have all struggled. “In My Blood” missed the Top 10 in the U.S and the four subsequent singles all flopped. Now, the Canadian singer is trying to “save” this era with a re-release of the second single “Lost In Japan” (my favorite from the album) with a Zedd remix. The remix has been out for a few days now and the reception has been rather cold. As of this post, the remix is nowhere to be found on the Top 100 Songs chart on iTunes USA. But that isn’t messing with Shawn’s promotion plans. He has performed the new version on a couple of TV shows and last night (Oct. 25) he premiered the official music video for “Lost In Japan” on YouTube. And here comes the confusing part. The music video isn’t entirely of the remix version but it’s a combination of the original and the Zedd remix. And the remix is only present in the last minute of the music video… so… what was the point of the new version in the end? I mean, someone is playing with our heads and I don’t like that.

First of all, I must say I loved the music video. Shawn looked so handsome in it, I loved all of references to the “Lost In Translation” movie (I mean, when in Tokyo… lol), Alisha Boe (“13 Reasons Why”) looked so pretty as Shawn’s on-screen love interest and I love how she’s getting more and more exposure, and yeah, nothing to criticize here – this put me in a good mood and made me nostalgic too remembering my karaoke fun days when I was in Tokyo. Now, as for the “remix” controversy, poor Zedd (who appears for literally one second in the video). He worked hard on this remix and he had to witness how his version was in a way insulted in this newly-premiered music video. The remix was ‘shoved’ to the last minute of the video as I previously mentioned giving all the ‘glory’ to the original version. And don’t get me wrong, I’m more of a fan of the original but then why not shooting the music video when “Lost In Japan” was officially released as single several months ago and wait till now – and confuse your fans by pushing the ‘forgotten’ original instead of the new remix you just gave us… you see this messy mess? Oh well, I just this music video works in favor of something. I’ll keep streaming, both versions just in case, hoping “Lost In Japan” gets back on the Top 100 on iTunes in America.
