New Year, New Sound! Listen to Icona Pop’s New Single “Emergency” Now
I still think Icona Pop has more to offer the world music-wise, but this new single “Emergency” isn’t helping my mind stay that way.
The Swedish duo, famous for their 2012/2013 worldwide monster hit “I Love It”, is planning to release their second international album later this year, although the original strategy was on dropping in 2014 – a ‘lead single’ was even released; “Get Lost”, but since that wasn’t very well welcomed, the Icona Pop’s label sent them back to the studio to work on totally brand new material, and a new single has picked. It’s titled “Emergency”, it surfaced online today (May 25) – stream it below - but it won’t be up for grab on digital stores until tomorrow.
Just a tiny warning before you go ahead and play it; “it’s so different from previous Icona Pop material. Don’t expect to fist-pump to this in the club”.
“Emergency” is giving me jazz, soul and commercial music vibes all at the same time. By commercial music I mean that “touch” that will make it pleasant on everybody’s ears quite easily, and doesn’t mean that Top 40 radios in the US will be willing to play this.
It ain’t no “I Love It”, it’s different for Icona Pop, and different is often good, but for some reason I’m just not feeling this a lot. Might be a grower; who knows.
It’s just that the Icona Pop brand has severely been linked to “club music” in my brain that’s really hard to fully accept this song “Emergency”, even though it’s an upbeat one. And of course, I don’t think the song is that great. True the girls sound terrific in their parts, and the saxophone melody is pretty cool, but as a whole it just doesn’t scream “clever new single choice” to me. And the fact that Icona Pop don’t sing the chorus of their own is just awkward. Who is that man singing and why isn’t he credited on the single cover?
