Melanie Martinez’ “Cry Baby" Music Video Is A Bit Brutal: Watch
I guess this means we have a new single from Melanie Martinez’ debut album. The New York singer premiered last night (March 14th) the official music video for the album’s title track “Cry Baby” on YouTube.
“Directed and conceived by” Melanie Martinez, and co-starring Stella Rose Saint Clair (mother), and Ian Volandt (boy), the “Cry Baby” music video lasts SIX MINUTES in total - of which 2 belong to the cinematic intro.
Personally, the song is of my liking - I like its conceptual theme, but the “Cry Baby” music video doesn’t really move me, and in fact, I sadly think it falls into the “tedious/monotonous” category (sorry Mel, but I love you, though!). Oh, and by the way, the intro of the video is particularly BRUTAL. When the “rabbit doctor” hits the pregnant woman in the stomach? Hello?
The “Cry Baby” music video tells the story of a “little Melanie Martinez” who is raised by an awful, alcoholic mother. In some scenes we can see baby Melanie refusing to eat from the spoon of her mother, who is simultaneously drinking off a bottle, and in others; Melanie crying a river - for the appalling behavior of her mother I assume - and causing the room to literally flood and turn into an ocean.
A very conceptual music video too, I think it nails the message of the song, but as I said above, the final result didn’t slay me, nor I connected with it, and it is not something that I would want to watch again. However, I still live for Melanie’s creative mind, and I can’t wait for her to get back in the studio to start working on album number two.
