Maggie Rogers Unveils Music Video For “Alaska”, The Song That Left Pharrell Speechless!
I know of a person who had Pharrell on the verge of crying because of her music. She is Maggie Rogers.
This occurred at a masterclass the “Happy” singer gave at New York University in the spring where he was played the demo of “Alaska”, an original song by Maggie Rogers.
From that moment on Pharrell Williams talked so much about Maggie everywhere he went and on social media that major labels eventually noticed her. So there went Capitol Records and offered Maggie the chance to officially release “Alaska” through them. And that was exactly what happened. June 17th was the magical date for Maggie. And only LAST WEEK Maggie unveiled the official music video for “Alaska” on her YouTube page (she took her time so it'd be perfect). What is the song about? In Maggie’s words…
“It’s the story of a time in my life when I was really lost, and it in turn has provided so much clarity for me.”
If you hear Maggie singing about nature in the opening verse of “Alaska” that’s because she likes to find inspiration in nature and this song is titled after her hiking trip to Alaska. “I just started making music again a couple of months ago and I can’t make enough. And all I wanna do is combine that folk imagery and harmony and natural samples … with the sort of backbone and energy of dance music”, she told Pharrell.
The sound of “Alaska” is a cross between folk and dance music, it’s all very indie, and and it’s all filled with vulnerable, mystical, and nostalgic vocals by Maggie Rogers. This girl does not only know how to write unique songs, but she also knows exactly how to execute them vocally so it pierces through the listener’s soul. I see why Pharrell almost cried to this..
I sense a great future ahead of Maggie. Capitol Records, you take care of her!
PS: Lived a bit for the music video! Loved the natural setting, loved Maggie’s quirky hand moves, and I loved to see how she gets down at wild parties!
