Lana del Rey Robbed by John Legend at 72nd Golden Globes: The 'Best Original Song' Drama
Oh no! That was supposed to be her night.
I bet Lana del Rey died a little when she heard Prince announce John Legend and Common’s “Glory” as the winner of “Best Original Song” at the 72nd Golden Globe Awards ceremony held last night (Jan. 11) at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Lana’s “Big Eyes” was up against John Legend’s “Glory” (“Selma”), Lorde’s “Yellow Flicker Beat” (“Mockingjay – Part 1”), Sia’s “Opportunity” (“Annie”), and Patti Smith’s “Mercy Is” (Noah). Out of the five nominated songs, “Glory” was the only whose 'parent’ film was nominated in the ‘Best Drama’ category, giving it ‘the edge’. Still, I was blindly confident that Lana was going to end up taking home the Golden Globe. In my humble opinion, “Big Eyes” was by far the best song in this year's soundtrack category.
What made "Glory" win then? Aside the fact "Selma" was nominated in the most important category of the night, "Best Drama", as I previously mentioned, the message of the song certainly must’ve influenced in the deciding panel too. With the recent NYC police murders, and the Michael Brown, and Eric Garner cases, "Glory" touched these topics in a way in its lyrics, and its relatability to the current ‘revolution’ that’s happening in America in regards racism/hate, it all gave "Glory" 'the edge' to ultimate win “Best Original Song”. Did it truly deserve it? No. “Big Eyes” was the best song in the bunch. Lana del Rey got robbed that’s for sure. I don't have anything against "Glory" (I think it's a great record with a great, strong message) but how many songs like this have we heard in the latest years? "Big Eyes” was 100% original. I guess it was matter of bad timing, bad luck.
Watch below John Legend and Common’s acceptance speech. Good thing John let the rapper do the majority of the talking. His speech was AMAZING.
PS: How flawless did Lana look in the red carpet? (Remember “Honeymoon” is coming!)
