K-Pop Star CL Releases English Language Buzz Single “Doctor Pepper”: Stream The Diplo-Produced Track NOW!
I expected better from you CL. I’m not going to get tragically disappointed or anything though because I know “Doctor Pepper” is just a “taste” of what’s to come from the South Korean bad ass singer’s forthcoming English language debut album. And by “taste” I hope she means “the sound” and not the lyrics because this is a department she has to improve in a lot – or simply get a handful of talented writers to write songs for her because evidently her ‘not so good’ English is limiting her.
“Doctor Pepper”, produced by Diplo and released to the world today (May 22) via SoundCloud, is a buzz single from singer CL, whom a few of you might know as the undeniable star of K-pop all-female band 2NE1 – and if you haven’t heard from this South Koran group at all I recommend you to check out their music on YouTube ASAP because it’s pretty freakin’ awesome.
Justin Bieber’s manager Scooter Braun has signed CL to his management company and he’s currently on the quest of making her break America. He’s hooking her up with the hottest producers of the American music industry, some material has already been recorded, her English debut album is happening, and all what’s left to do now is just wait for her REAL first single to drop and see if the American public will accept her or now.
So far, though, I ain’t impressed. “Doctor Pepper” is weak because although the Diplo production is bananas, CL’s catchy yet repetitive and gets-too-annoying-too-quick lyrics are just underwhelming from an objective point of view. Guest rappers RiFF RaFF and OG Maco were evidently REQUIRED in this song because without them “Doctor Pepper” would feel a bit too “empty” if you know what I mean. Nevertheless, to say something positive, I like CL’s attitude and swagger in the song, and she just needs a group of songwriters working for her and she’ll be all set to slay in the English language.
Oh, and check out CL’s explanation of the origin of the song: “Diplo canceled a session on me, and I was so mad at him. I was drinking a can of Dr. Pepper and wrote the song so I could go home as soon as possible”. LOL
