Kesha’s Comeback Single “Praying” Is Too Powerful & Clearly Dr Luke-Inspired: Review + Full Audio
My lord Jesus Christ. This is one of the most powerful songs I’ve ever heard in my whole existence so far.
Kesha dropped today (July 6) her new single “Praying”, from her forthcoming album “Rainbow”, and it is the most perfect lead single from an album ever. It may not be “radio friendly”, it may not be a “bop”, it may not be “pure pop music”, it may not sound like the kind of music we’ve heard from Kesha throughout the years, but baby, this is remarkable music no matter what.
“I hope you're somewhere praying, praying / I hope your soul is changing, changing / I hope you find your peace”, sings Kesha on the chorus of her newly-released forgiving anthem. “Praying” is a piano song that is directly dedicated to Dr. Luke, the man who allegedly (must use this “allegedly” term for legal reasons but in my heart I 100% believe Kesha’s story) raped Kesha, although his name is never mentioned. Instead of Kesha saying nasty things to him, insult him; bring up her legal battle with him on the lyrics or wish him the worst in life, forgiving Kesha only hopes Dr. Luke is “somewhere” praying, and she hopes his soul will one day change for good. In context, this song’s message is so powerful. I say “in context” because not everyone is capable of forgiving a person who has hurt you so bad like Kesha’s doing in this song. So even though not everyone will be able to relate to this or make this song their own, we can all just appreciate the song for what it is. A personal song from Kesha, who is opening her heart and her mind to the world, and this all very moving.
Kesha’s vocals on “Praying” are just mind-blowing, that high note towards the end pierced through my soul, I loved how the tranquil piano production of the song changed for a more potent piano sound after the bridge, and of course, I loved the music video too (premiered at the same time of the single’s digital release). Watch the MV below. The music video is all about “pop”, because unlike the serious mood of the actual song, the music video is very colorful, and feels really “pop culture”. Although all of the messages, and all of the decorations Kesha and director Jonas Åkerlund added to the video do give the video that connecting bridge to the song’s lyrics.
I’m not sure yet if “Praying” will be a radio hit for Kesha, or if it will be able to top the Billboard Hot 100 (but my dream is that it achieves that) but for now we should focus on making this a steady number one on iTunes. “Praying” is Kesha’s best song to date (“commercialness” aside), it’s quality music, and it’s truly a song with a potential to become legendary, a classic, and timeless. I can totally see generations forward using Kesha's song for activism global campaigns.
Praying is here ????
