Calum Scott’s Coming-Out Story Takes Song Form In “No Matter What”: Warning, This Is Heavily Emotional!
This song has touched me on so many levels. It really doesn’t get more emotional than this. Bravo to Calum Scott for telling his story like this, for opening his heart up like this, and to give others the strength they were looking for.
The UK singer, who rose to fame after competing on “Britain’s Got Talent” in 2015 and who released only earlier this year his debut album “Only Human” (Top 5 album in the UK), released a brand new song over the weekend titled “No Matter What”. This is a song he had debuted on tour a few months ago but whose studio version was yet to be unveiled. Now that much-anticipated version is finally out and the project it will be part of has been also revealed. Calum will be putting out a re-release of his debut album, now titled "Only Human: Special Edition” on November 30. Besides “No Matter What”, he will be including other new songs. Pre-order here.
As for “No Matter What”, the first single of the re-release, it is a powerful coming-out anthem. It hears Calum Scott speaking of the time he came out as a gay man to his parents and friends. With his friends he didn’t have much luck, as many stopped speaking to him, and thankfully with his parents everything turned out to go okay. “Took me years to tell my mother, I expected the worst / I gathered all the courage in the world / She said, "I love you no matter what / I just want you to be happy and always be who you are", sings Calum in this emotional ballad.
I loved his narration of the story, the arrangement of the ballad was exquisite and built when it needed to built, I got so emotional hearing his whole journey, and overall I think this will serve as an “encouragement” tool for many out there, if you know what I mean. “Always be who you are” is the key lyric of the song and it was uttered by Calum’s mother. Bravo!
