BLACKPINK’s “As If It’s Your Last” One Chorus Away From Being Perfect: Single Review
So yeah, I'm a little late on this one but here it is finally. My review of BLACKPINK's new single "As If It's Your Last".
Although I don't post much about K-pop on the blog, I am a big fan. It's just that with all the American releases, it's sometimes hard to find time to include K-pop posts, the way I would want, too. But, I know there's been a lot of vuzz regarding Blackpink's new single, I feel more than with any K-pop single in a long time, so I thought I would really make the effort to do a review this time.
Unfortunately, it's not going to be the review I hoped I would do about this much hyped song.
It had been 8 months since girl group Blackpink had released their last single "Stay", so fans were already super anticipating their follow up release. "As If It's Your Last" was released on digital stores this past weekend, after several days of teasing on social media, simultaneously with its official music video. The purchasing attraction for this song was such that it made Blackpink become the highest charting K-pop girl group on iTunes in America. Yes, America. The song peaked at #12. A few spots higher than the feat 2NE1 had achieved several months ago. So you see, the power of K-pop has reached every corner of the world.
But, was the song really worth all the crazy purchasing and streaming?
I personally think the song is very cute, the synthey beat is so well produced, the verses and the pre-chorus build up are everything, but the chorus, the most important part of the song, just falls a little too flat for me. It's generic and kind of weak. After that build up, I thought the girls would get crazy in the chorus, but opposite happened. The song stepped back one tempo in the chorus. I was already ready to throw my hands up in the air or get down and dirty, but the girls instead went to have picnic at the park. That's the energy I got. I really thought "As If It's Your Last" was going to become my favorite Blackpink song after "Playing With Fire", for I got hyped from the teasers too, but that didn't happen. Still, there's no need to panic. I still like the song, the melody is very cute, and the music video and the first TV performances I've seen have helped minimize my slight disappointment. "As If It's Your Last" is already a hit for the girls, so congratulations, but I really need for them to bring it completely in their next single.
