Audio + Review: Amelia Lily - "California" (New Single)

amelia lily california single cover

Welcome back, Amelia Lily! The ‘X Factor UK’ alum recently inked a new deal with Warner Music - after getting dropped by Sony last year - and will be releasing her new single 'California' on iTunes UK on August 24th! But in UK music industry fashion, the single is available for full stream NOW, a whole month before digital release.

The departure from Sony also meant saying goodbye to Xenomania. The production group produced Amelia’s flaw-free debut single ‘You Bring Me Joy’ in 2012. The dance-pop tune reached #2 in the UK.

I’m still shocked at how Sony let Amelia Lily go. Surely ‘something’ happened. Creative differences? A fight erupted? Was Amelia perhaps tired of all the push backs?

Whatever the reason was, thankfully, Ms. Lily has found a new home in Warner Music.

The first single she’s releasing with her new label is ‘California’, a track co-written with Tim Woodcock (John Newman, The Vamps, The Wanted).

Review: I definitely ‘like’ the song but I’m not loving it. The chorus IS very catchy, and the ‘you’re in California’, ‘I’m in London’ story will certainly be very relatable to a few couples. It’s just that I’m not completely sold on the verses, and the pop/rock production – whole sound of the song just doesn’t scream 2014 to me. Hopefully it’ll grow on me later, and makes want to buy the song on iTunes in August. ‘California’ is a new sound for Amelia – I wonder if Warner chose this new sound for her or if it was Lily' decision? - and it's definitely going to take some time to adapt it.

Hit or Miss?
