Alessia Cara Returns With "Growing Pains": Single Premiere
I love Alessia Cara but I don't LOVE this.
The Canadian singer-songwriter released her new single "Growing Pains" on digital platforms on Friday morning.
"Growing Pains" is the first single from Alessia's upcoming sophomore studio album, that is the follow-up to her critically-acclaimed 2015 debut "Know-it-all".
"Growing Pains" is a beautifully-written song, I won't deny that but it's not giving me "single" material. All of Alessia's singles from the "Know-it-all" era gave me "single" vibes and they all ended up being hits. Alessia's sound has always been very unique, but it had a "radio" edge no matter what. But this new song "Growing Pains", despite its chorus being kind of radio-friendly, the rest is giving me "something Alessia wrote for Alessia but not for her audience" vibes. This is more of a confessional track, a page of Alessia's diary. I'm not saying she didn't have the right to make a page of her diary into a song, but make it a SINGLE?
I repeat, the chorus is cute - even though all she sings is "Hey, hey, hey, yeah, hey, yeah" - but the verses and rest are "bland" for an "official single" song in comparison to Alessia's previous efforts. I hope you truly get what I'm trying to say.
