New Music: Brooke Candy - “Happy Days” [Full Audio + Review]
Brooke Candy, the raptress from Oxnard, California who slayed us with her “Opulence” EP and the freaky music video for the title track in 2014, is finally gearing up to release her debut studio album; something that will occur later this year via RCA Records – who, thank God, still have Brooke’s back. For a second I thought they were going to drop her. I mean, two years without an official release would make anyone worried.
The lead single from Brooke’s much-anticipated debut LP has just been revealed. It’s a song titled “Happy Days” and it’s available as of now on Spotify and iTunes.
“Happy Days” is a calm electronic-rap song, with a kind of mainstream edge, which is undoubtedly a softening of Brooke's original sound. “Happy Days” would not have made it on the “Opulence” EP. Believe me. It’s so chill, ha. 2014 Brooke was all about being freaky and outrageous – take a look at the “Opulence” music video if you need a reminder – while her 2016 self seems to be more chill, and radio-oriented. No doubt RCA had something to do with this change in sound from Brooke. They must’ve told her to take it down a notch. It was obvious radios were not going support “Opulence” (still RCA decided to give it a go just in case), and no radio time means failure for an artist. RCA, knowing this is the truth (they learned the hard way), must’ve advised Brooke to get a more mainstream sound, respecting her style the most she could, or else they would have a hard job keeping her in their roster.

Anyhow, I’m personally really liking this. “Happy Days” may not be “Opulence” but I still feel Brooke Candy’s essence in it (not much, but something's still there). It’s a really cool song, and Brooke can totally pull off this type of vocals she debuts here (very nice). The Oxnard girl sings about wanting her “happy days” be brought back to her in her new single. It’s kind of a moody, dark song, but it’s so cool to listen to. I can totally see myself jamming to this while driving in my roofless car on the freeway. It's the perfect song to listen to when you're feeling depressed and you want to get out of that state of mind ASAP.
UPDATE: On "Happy Days", Brooke's said:
“The song is about transformations. Whether that be emotional, physical, spiritual, relational -transformations and change are what define life.” says Brooke “We're all looking for different ways to achieve "happy days" or some sense of fulfillment or satisfaction and this song addresses that struggle. I've always been into exploring different variations of myself and style. “In recent past I've found myself undergoing endless transformations through emotional states of being and it is reflected through changing vocal styles and aesthetic approaches...I am exploring sounds that are bit more polished and digestible.”
