New Music: Becky G - "Break A Sweat" [Premiere / Review]

Our favorite singer-rapper from Inglewood, California, that is Becky G, gave NYC’s Z100 radio a world exclusive last night, August 19. They were green-lighted to premiere Becky’s new Dr. Luke-produced single “Break A Sweat” (You will be able to buy this song starting tomorrow Friday on iTunes). If my counting isn’t wrong, “Break A Sweat” becomes the fourth single to be lifted from Ms. G’s yet-to-be-released full-length debut album – RCA’s still saying it’s coming out later this year… but we’ll see!

What an energetic single! “Break A Sweat” is fire stuff (although I like it less than “Shower” and “Can’t Stop Dancing” but more than “Lovin’ So Hard). Becky G drops the ‘Caribbean/island’ influence she used in her last two singles and returns to a more pure-pop sound in the newbie “Break A Sweat”. Becky raps through the verses and sings in the chorus. The story of the song is that of a girl telling her love interest that in order to “get her body”, he has to “blow her mind first” = treat her good. The chorus is loud and massive. Don’t know how she did it, perhaps she’s taken a trillion vocal lessons since her last single release, but Becky G sounds super mature in this new song. Her vocals have improved so much. She really pushed her limits in this one; I’m impressed. But I’m also kind of freaked out because in the chorus, when she really goes all out with her voice, she sounds surprisingly similar to Demi Lovato. Now that I did not see happen.

Hit or Miss?

UPDATE 1: Audio now available on VEVO (HQ).
