What’s the hype?
I woke up this morning with my Twitter feed flooded with overexcited praise for Camila Cabello’s “Never Be The Same” TV debut performance on “The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon” from last night. So I watched.
“Never Be The Same” is the second single from the songstress’ self-titled first solo album “Camila”, which hits stores this Friday.
There is no doubt the “Tonight Show” performance of “Havana” last year was a before and after moment for the single. Me and I think everybody in this whole planet truly fell in love with “Havana” after that performance. And Camila clearly was hoping to repeat the formula with the same success for “Never Be The Same”. Unfortunately, she fell short.
For this performance Camila opted to wear a warrioress, Joan of Arc-esque seamless bodysuit embellished with Swarovski crystals and have supporting visuals displayed on a large screen in the back. What kind of visuals? A bit of everything: the stars, clouds, an eclipse, the earth, city streets, a rocket launching, a clock, or her own face.
Camila served overdramatics during the entire performance that included an intense one-on-one moment with her own reflection before a mirror.
Vocal-wise, there were some nice moments, but I detect there were definitely some lip-synched moment as well – and that’s not very cool. And some of the live moments were unfortunately a mess. Camila sounded at times too robotic due to her autotuned microphone.
In the end, the performance was kind of enjoyable, but not up to the level of the “Havana” performance on the same show and definitely not the best Camila Cabello can do with “Never Be The Same” live. We’re 100% convinced a better performance will come our way very soon.
PS: I wrote this post almost 4 hours after the performance aired. I see “Never Be The Same” peaking at #69 on iTunes. So a massive immediate positive reaction to the performance there has been not. Still, we're sure the song will rise eventually. It's not a bad song and since Camila will promote the heck out of it, it's bound to rise. But we're sure too her team was betting on an immediate Top 10 peak after this performance and clearly they've failed in their expectations.
